Karla Felix Navarro’s interest in research led her to partner with the Lemieux laboratory to carry out her master’s thesis project in computer science with a specialization in artificial intelligence. His thesis focused on the use of deep learning models and phenotypic profiling for the prediction of compound bioactivity. Before joining IRIC, Karla worked in industry and was an academic member of the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology (FEIT) of the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) in Australia. She received her PhD in Science from UTS in 2008, using network management models and wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for medical monitoring. Karla completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Bioinformatics from [McGill University] (https://www.mcgill.ca/) and a Masters of Commerce with specialization in Innovation Strategy and Entrepreneurship from the University of Sydney (Usyd). Karla’s ambition is to leverage the use of deep learning and transfer models to aid precision medicine and the discovery of new treatments for cancer and immunological diseases.
